plot synopsis:
The documentary material is originally British shot by Blyth and Young. Director Paul added further German footage and a fictional story with German actors: two of three brothers go to war, the third and yougest eventually volunteers as well against the protest of his mother, who in the last scene mourns her sons on a military cemetary.

The "Abend", the late edtion of the social-democratic newspaper "Vorwärts" wrote about the film: "It would take only a few more steps and you would have the material for a warfilm that is at the same time an anti-warfilm. Some nice pictures added from behind the lines with officers leading an easy life, and a few more scenes from the homefront, where industrialists gain weight - and a true warfilm would be complete. (April 30, 1930).

The film is dedicated to "those who battled, suffered, and died on the banks of the Somme".
