Yugoslavia, 1941: Marko, fresh from an education in America, returns to his homeland and discovers how brutal the Nazis really are. Instead of returning to the States, he stays in Yugoslavia and organizes a resistance movement.
Captain Kohler, an Austrian soldier, discovers that his childhood sweetheart, Anna is among the Jews he is supposed to transport to the POW camp. Kohler wants to help Anna who hopes to rescue her grandfather from the concentration camps, but she will not allow it, knowing the danger involved. As the two secretly meet Marko's men attack the boat, and Anna helps Kohler escape. She is captured, then decide to join the partisans rather than hiding out with the other Jews in her area. Soon she finds herself in love with Marko.
