Sime, a peasant in rural Yugoslavia, is not interested in how in whatever faction is in power as long as he can keep his farm. When his son is drafted by the fascists into the Army, he hides him in the attic. Despite his attempts to play each side against the other to save his family and property Sime gets caught up in the war and the ensuing political turmoil.
