Between January and May 1944 105.000 allied and 80.000 German soldiers die in the battle for Monte Cassino, one of the worst battles during World War II. When the Allies arrive in Rome, the monastery Monte Cassino, that is occupied by the Germans, stands in their way. For a very long time they try to win the area for themselves, but without success. In only some hours an attack brings the change. The Allies start to bomb the monastery and destroy everything. But the Germans don't move backwards, they hide in the ruins. From that point on, there is a bloody battle in trenches, holes and behind the rest of the old walls. Hunger, illness, hopelessness and death are the threats of the soldiers. Just regional armistices, in which wounded soldiers are saved and chocolate is exchanged between the lines, lighten up the brutal fight. On May 18th the Allies win the battle and occupie the area, that doesn't make any strategic sense any more.
