plot synopsis:
In 1939 during the Sino-Japanese war the young nurse Sakura Nishi assists the surgeon Dr. Okabe. She helps him with inumerable amputations. In the crowded wards she gives sympathy for many of the men and even sexual services to one of the amputees. She falls in love with Dr. Okabe and follows him to the front, though he is impotent due to his morphine addiction. She succeeds in freeing him from his addiction and helps him to regain his will to live, but shortly afterwards he is killed on the battlefield.
