plot synopsis:
“Ghosts of War” is an American war horror film from 2020 directed by Eric Bress. The film combines elements of the classic war film with supernatural and psychological motifs and increasingly develops in the direction of science fiction.

France, 1944: A group of American paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division are tasked with securing a remote castle that was previously used by the Wehrmacht. What initially appears to be a routine mission quickly turns into an eerie nightmare. The soldiers notice unexplained noises, strange apparitions and evidence of a gruesome past within the castle walls.
Through a found diary, they learn of a family that once lived in the estate and was brutally murdered by the Nazis for harboring persecuted people. The men begin to believe that the family's ghosts still linger in the building. When they want to leave the castle, they fall into a kind of time loop in which events repeat themselves and their reality is shaken. One by one, they are confronted with visions and memories that no longer seem to fit into the year 1944.
Finally, it is revealed that the soldiers are in a military simulation based on the Second World War. This technology is used to treat traumatized veterans from a recent deployment in the Middle East. In fact, the men are modern-day US soldiers who failed to save a civilian family during a mission in Afghanistan - an experience that has left them deeply scarred. The family they failed with bears the same name as the one that was persecuted in the simulation: Helwig.
But the therapy does not go as planned. An ancient curse, spoken by a member of the slain family, seems to have infiltrated the simulation and forces the men to relive their trauma again and again. The protagonist Chris realizes that only a confrontation with the truth and a sincere confrontation with guilt can break the cycle.
