The American troops spend Winter 1944 in the Ardennes and Huertgen Forrest. In February 1945 they started a large offensive to bring about the end of the Third Reich. Two dozen cameramaen of the US Signal Corps were on the spot ("Beneath the Valley of the Ultra Vixens, 1979"). They documented the downfall of Nazi-Germany on 35 mm celluloid: liberation and collapse, death and devastation, cheers and relieve: More than thousand roles of film are shelved in American archives with hundreds of hours of film material, shot between mid-February and early May 1945. Some of the scenes have become historic icons in the past 60 years. The capture of the Remagen Bridge i.e. or the liberation of of the Dachau Concentration camp. But most of the films have not been touched for decades.

Michael Kloft, author for SPIEGEL-TV, the TV branch of Germany's renown weekly news magazine, has sifted through the entire stock and discovered many scenes that have never been shown before. The US soldiers took village by village, city by city, in the beginning against harsh resistence by the Germans - "embedded" in the advancing units the cameramen stood in the front line.

For this two-part documentary the most impressive scenes were chosen and edited, from the victory at the "Bloody Ruhr" by the end of February to the meeting of American and Russian soldiers at Torgau on the Elbe on April 25th, 1945.
SPIELGEL TV analysed army reports and soldier's diaries, searched for letters and eyewitness reports to reconstruct the events of the American advance.
