plot synopsis:
The film impressively shows how the Kemper family leaves their comfortable life in Berlin-Grunewald behind and flees to various European cities to escape persecution by the Nazis. In Switzerland, Paris and finally London, they have to deal with the challenges of exile and uncertainty. Anna and Max have to adapt to each new environment, learn new languages and cope with cramped living conditions and financial difficulties.
The threat of the Nazis remains ever present, whether through news of friends and relatives in Germany suffering under the racist laws, or through the hostility and prejudice they encounter as Jewish refugees in their host countries. This uncertainty about the future shapes their daily lives and their decisions.
Judith Kerr's novel is the first part of a trilogy that follows Anna's development from a nine-year-old girl to an adult woman in the 1950s. It is a moving testimony to the refugee experience during the Second World War and explores the themes of loss, hope and resilience in a turbulent time. The film "When Hitler Stole the Pink Rabbit" impressively captures the emotional highs and lows of the Kemper family during their exile in Europe.
