plot synopsis:
Rick Leland has no loyalty to his home country, that threw him out of the army. This is why he boards a Japanese ship for the Orient in late 1941. But what is the true story of Lelands past? And what is his motive for getting close to the fellow passenger Doctor Lorenz? The motive for getting close to the attractive traveller Alberta Marlow is pretty obvious.

remarks:
Director John Huston went off to participate in the war before the film was finished. Vincent Sherman directed the final scenes.

Originally this film was about the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor, but when they actually did it, the plot was transfered to the Panama Canal.
