The Davis Family receives the sad news that their son Danny was killed in action in Vietnam. In order to repress their helplessness they decide to send their German Shepard named Rain to military training as a rescue dog. In Fort Benning, GA, Rain is teamed with Pvt. Joe Holland. After a difficult start the two soon become friends. When send into action in Vietnam Rain saves the lives of several soldiers but eventually is wounded himself. Now he depends on Holland`s help as army regulations state that the dog allow wounded animals to be put down.
