Former official GDR photographer Thomas Billhardt photographed the Vietnam war in 1967. Many of his pictures wer published all over the world. One sows a dead chld killed in an air raid. Three decades after the war Billhardt returns to Vietnam in search for the dead child's family in order to them the picture. On his way he visits many places and people whose war experinces he captured in his photos and published in Germany later. From the days before 1969 one beautiful memory remains that serves as the thread of the film: a young, pretty girl on national route No. 1. Her name was Hong Li and her brigade repaired supply line. From the translator Billhardt learned of the girl's hardship, who had to live under most primitive conditions far away from home. With the help of the population and an exhibition in the center of Hanoi he tries to find her again.
