plot synopsis:
During the First World War on the Italian Alpine front: The American Red Cross driver Lt. Henry and nurse Catherine fall in love and have a torrid affair, which results in Catherine’s pregnancy. As the months pass, Henry and Catherine lose contact with each other. To save their love from war they escape to Switzerland, where the baby is still born and Catherine dies at childbirth.
